I love to teach the masters, as we have so much to learn from them.  Mike Beeman is one of my very favorite contemporary masters. With his impressive artistry and economy of stroke, he helps me so much in my teaching.  I can use

Drawing from life is the single most important thing for developing artistic skills. That’s why we do it all the time at the Top of the World. Here are this week’s gorgeous still life paintings.

Class Schedule

Can’t believe it’s almost February. This week we’ll be doing still life – drawing what we see is the most important skill of being an artist. Encourage your kids to draw the simple things they see every day. Correct me

Free Draw

After we’ve finished a “unit” of hard work, such as the figure work we did for a few weeks, the kids have a “free draw” week where they can paint anything they want. Here’s this week’s free draw.

Super Heros!

Kids used all of the stuff they learned over the past few weeks about figures to create their own super hero action figures. First they had to define their super power and develop their character, then they made their paintings.

Feet & Hands

This week we warmed up with quick sketches of feet, and then drew our non-dominant hand.  Then we made paintings of hands. Hands aren’t really terribly attractive, so we did our best to make them beautiful and interesting.

Go Figure!

For the first month or so of 2017 we will be looking at bodies, thinking about bodies and gesture and movement. We’ll think about proportion and relationships, and cool stuff like your foot is the same length as the distance
