Here comes Santa Claus!
Lots of great winter animals and birds last week, and now here comes Santa! This week we’ll be doing upside down Santa based on life paintings by and similar to Mike Beeman, one of my favorite contemporary painters. Upside-down painting is a wonderful way to force the mind to stop commandeering the work, and just trust the eyes and hands to do the job. It is an important practice in artistic training.
NEW STUDENT GALLERY!
I am excited to announce that, going forward, I will be selecting exemplary artworks to display in the student gallery in the hallway near the studio door. When a work is selected I’ll frame it, and hang it in the gallery for a month or so, and then return it to the artist. Selected works will be what I consider the best examples of what I am teaching in class, and art that makes me go Wow! It is not a competition; it is simply a way to honor great work. If the artist wants to (with parental permission) put a price on the work to sell, they are welcome to do that, and the gallery will take 10% commission. Like the annual show, this is a powerful way to show kids how displaying and selling artwork works in the real world (though galleries usually take 30-50%).
WIN AN EASEL – In other news, two lucky students will each win a wooden floor easel next week. At the end of this week, I will be drawing 2 names from a hat, and those lucky artists will each be taking an easel home. Watch this space for the winners.
Enjoy these awesome winter paintings, and scroll down for the schedule.
Please check the schedule carefully and correct me if I’m wrong.
