Marching into Faces

For the next few weeks we’ll be working on faces: The differences between real faces and cartoon and anime faces; learning from the Masters, DaVinci and Vermeer; studying expressions, and for the grand finale – selfies. Here’s the work for this week, where the kids warmed up with realistic and anime faces and then went on to their choice of Mona Lisa or the Girl with the Pearl Earring.  Amazing what you can teach using these two works: using value for volume, lost and found edges, proportion, position, and especially being aware of how the brain tends to make a big deal out of small things, like lips and eyes…
