Self Portraits

Once a year I do a unit on faces, expressions, and likenesses that culminates in the annual self portrait. These few weeks are when the kids work really hard and learn so much about everything: values and volume, lost and found edges, proportion and perspective, foreshortening, etc. One of the biggest things they learn is that if they take their eyes away from the subject, their big brains take over and make a big deal out of some very small things, like lips, eyes and nostrils. It’s a great lesson with some fabulous results.
