Path of Least Resistance

In addition to being committed to never stopping growing as an artist, and making art on a regular basis, I am also committed to teaching art Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and scheduled private lessons in any given week. I spend a lot of my time cooking up curriculum to keep it fresh and exciting, and making sure I have everything we need to make good art. I’m terrible at the clerical, but I do my best at the desk (and rhyming).
In the past ten years since the last time I raised my rates, the cost of materials has nearly tripled.  I’m determined to keep the classes affordable, and just need to afford to keep doing this in order to feel successful.  My success lies in your kids’ growth and development as artists and people. I have never looked at it as a profit-making endeavor, though I do depend on it for groceries and art supplies.
That said, all I ask for in return is commitment from kids and parents.  Commitment to show up, and to pay for the classes.  Sure, kids get sick and sent home from school, and I usually carry the balance over for unavoidable absence. But I still have to cover operating expenses when a kid is a no-show. In fact, any other sports or classes expect payment in advance, and it’s just tough luck if your kid gets sick or doesn’t feel like coming on a particular day. Why am I any different?
We have few rules here at the Top, but expectations are very high. I am an art teacher, not a babysitter. I expect kids to have a certain level of maturity and dedication; to be mindful and considerate of me and each other; to listen and learn – because that’s what they are here for. What makes the kids that come to me so special is their commitment to art. We’re all in it together.

CLASS SCHEDULE
Kids come down driveway to back door. We are a shoe-free house. Leave shoes in the pantry and come upstairs. Kids are welcome to bring indoor footwear like slippers.
Pay in advance for the number of classes you will attend in the month ahead. Payment is expected for last minute cancellations. Make checks payable to Heidi Mayo.
Please check the schedule carefully, and correct me if I’m wrong.
These classes have room for more, but I am not worried as things usually get busier when fall sports end.
