Lots of great winter animals and birds last week, and now here comes Santa!\u00a0This week we’ll be doing upside down Santa based on life paintings by and similar to\u00a0Mike Beeman<\/a>, one of my favorite contemporary painters. Upside-down painting\u00a0is a wonderful way to force the mind to stop commandeering the work, and just trust\u00a0the eyes and hands to do the job. It is an important practice in artistic training.<\/p>\n

NEW\u00a0STUDENT GALLERY!<\/span><\/h2>\n

I am excited to announce that, going forward, I will be selecting exemplary artworks to display in the student gallery in the hallway near\u00a0the studio door. When a work is selected\u00a0I’ll frame it, and hang it in the gallery for a month or so, and then return it to the artist. \u00a0Selected works will be what I consider the best examples of what I am\u00a0teaching in\u00a0class, and art that makes me go Wow! It is not a competition;\u00a0it is simply a way to honor great work.\u00a0\u00a0If the artist wants to (with parental\u00a0permission) put a price on the work to sell, they are welcome to do that, and the gallery will take 10% commission. \u00a0Like the annual show, this is a powerful way to show kids how displaying and selling artwork works in the real world (though galleries\u00a0usually take 30-50%).<\/p>\n

WIN AN EASEL – In other news, two lucky students will each win a wooden floor easel next week. At the end of this week, I will be drawing 2 names from a hat, and those lucky\u00a0artists will each be taking an easel home. Watch this space for the winners.<\/p>\n

\nStudents come down the driveway to the back door, leave shoes in the pantry. Kids are welcome to leave a pair of slippers here. We are enjoying the benefits of a shoe-free home. \ud83d\ude42 Heavy snow may change this entry plan.
\nMaximum class size is 8, so if you want a spot and see an opening, let me know.<\/p>\n
