Our brains tend to make big deals out of very small things – like facial features. For the next few weeks we’ll be working on our self portraits. This week we used a grid to practice getting things\u00a0to scale.\u00a0 Young artists\u00a0often make\u00a0giant eyes high up on the head because they have strong and persistent imagery in their big brains. The grid helps reign in those false perceptions while getting the artists to face facts about just how delicate and nuanced eyes, noses and mouths really are, how sometimes all they need is a\u00a0little shadow to make them appear.\u00a0 The reason why our mask-optional poses are at 45 degrees is that I have found that automatically making faces straight forward is another default habit that we hope to break by trusting what our eyes see, not what our brain thinks.\u00a0 Enjoy the kids’ grids, and scroll down for the class schedule.<\/p>\n
