Springtime at the Top!
The last big academic challenge we do during the school year is creating self portraits. To get the kids ready, last week we all did the same face, a portrait at 45 degrees rather than straight on, which is how we’re posing for our portraits. I gave the kids the option of wearing a mask, and most chose that to put themselves in this time in history, and also they get out of doing the nose and mouth. The reference below is chock full of big lessons in light and likeness, and just how minimal the suggestion of nose and mouth can be, as young artists tend to default to images already stuck in their brains. One of my biggest challenges is teaching people to believe their eyes, not their brains. My motto: Draw what you see, not what you think.
